WLM Safety Briefing.
Exploring the wilderness as a Wildlife Monitor can be exhilarating experience, but it is crucial to prioritize safety and conservation to ensure the protection of both your clients and wildlife in general. Begin by thoroughly planning your trip, and completing your daily Field Level Hazard Assessment (FLHA) to familiarizing yourself with the area’s terrain, weather conditions, wildlife awareness, group objective and any potential hazards. Equip yourself with essential gear, including maps, GPS, compass, first aid, optics, firearm and sufficient food and water supplies. Dress for the weather and proper footwear are essential. Practice Leave No Trace principals is vital for conservation; minimize your impact by sticking to established trails or designated work sites and properly managing attractants while respecting all wildlife. Stay informed about local regulations and any conservation efforts in the area you will be operating in, and always be prepared for emergencies by sharing your itinerary & daily report with your supervisor or outfitter. By combining safety precautions with a commitment to preserving natural habitats & wildlife corridors, you can enjoy the backcountry responsibly as a Guide & Wildlife Monitor and contribute to conservation for future generations.
